PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI — In a soccer field near the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, rows of green canvas tents are arranged neatly on the pitch, ready to receive new arrivals. This small encampment, built in recent days by Marines of Combat Logistics Battalion 24, out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., represents a transition of sorts: It will serve as a temporary rest and recovery center for Haitian patients released from the USNS Comfort , the giant Navy hospital ship that is anchored off the coast of Haiti. The Comfort , which sailed last month to support the relief effort here, became a prominent symbol of the relief effort, treating large numbers of Haitians injured in the massive January 12 earthquake. This small encampment – the Marines do not call it a clinic – is supposed to relieve pressure on the military’s medical system, by freeing up available bed space on the hospital ships. Marine Maj.
